Staying Informed Through The Masses

As marketers in small to mid-size companies we all want to be on the bleeding edge, in touch with not only what’s happening now, but what’s going to be happening next. What are consumers doing? What do they want? How do they see our brand? Other brands? How are they talking to each other? Are they talking about our brand? Are they talking at all??

Well, you get the idea. So how do we at 9Y Communications stay on top of all this? Obviously, there’s the web and all it’s resources. Duh. But aren’t we barraged enough with our news links and discussion groups that we really don’t have time to scour the web for such tidbits? Is there a better, more consolidated way to find what we’re looking for? Very LIKEly. (There’s a hint.)

Yep, social media. Just look at Facebook and all its connectivity. People are talking, talking with each other and talking about products, brands, services, devices, exes, last weekend, and… well, again, you get the idea.

Add to that Twitter, YouTube and the rest, and a savvy observer can gain all sorts of insights into consumers. Granted, a lot of disregarding of the silly will take place, but there’s even something to be learned from that aspect of consumer behavior. But these social media outlets are direct pipelines to what consumers are thinking, products they’re buying, technology they’re using or not, and so much more. You don’t have to look far for a “general public feeling” about any number of subjects. And it’s real time, or at least VERY recent.

Next time you want to know what’s going on out there, do yourself a favor and be a fly on a wall or two in Facebook, listen to the tweets of Twitter and see what people are watching on YouTube. You’ll find it very informative and probably get a chuckle or two out of it as well!
